What is Speaking Up?

People with learning disabilities get together to talk and learn about things that matter to them such as:

    • Getting a job
    • Managing money
    • Staying safe
    • Relationships

We don’t just talk! We invite people to talk to us like the Police, Community Nurses and even our local MP.

Here are our Speaking Up Groups

Speaking Up update – August 2019

Speaking Up groups have been busy addressing topics including Health and Hospitals, Recycling and taking care of the environment and speaking to their local police teams about keeping safe!

Our members have also been speaking up about serious issues effecting many of our members lives including unfair benefit assessments and changes to their support packages! Members have been working hard to raise awareness about these issues and to work with local decision makers to make positive changes!

After the summer our groups will be practicing their Speaking Up skills, meeting local employers/ volunteer opportunities and learning more about money and housing.

Women’s Group Update – August 2019

The women’s group was a project funded by Dorset Community Foundation from the Tampon Tax Community Fund which created a safe space for women with learning disabilities to talk about different topics. We visited a breast screening unit, spoke about relationships, looked at employment and volunteering and much more. One of the ladies who attended the workshops said it was a “sisterhood” of women now as they have all become close friends. We have made a video about the workshops which will be launched Monday 23rd September at the Dorford Centre, Dorchester.
