Extra Projects

See below for some examples of additional projects, workshops and support we’ve delivered in the last couple of years.

Workshops

Sometimes we are able to run workshops or smaller projects which address particular concerns our members have. This can range from Mens and Womens Groups to learning about money to better understanding benefits. Below we highlight some of the workshops which we have recently run.

Women's Group

We held a fabulous series of workshops for women, funded by Dorset Community Foundation from the Tampon Tax Community Fund. Girls Aloud created a safe space for women with learning disabilities to come together; to talk and learn more about different female based subjects, which had proved very difficult for them to do otherwise.

With support from, and visits to different organisations, they learnt more about topics ranging from smears, breast screening and sexual health to relationships, employment, personal grooming, internet safety and independent living.

One of the ladies who attended the workshops said it felt like a “sisterhood” of women now as they have all become close friends.

Please do watch our video about Girls Aloud.

Independent Living:

How can we support?

A big worry for parents of sons and daughters with learning disabilities who are still living at home, is what happens when they are too old or become unable to care for their son or daughter.

People First Dorset supports a group of parents to come together as an independent support group to explore the options for moving on.

Sports Activities with People First Dorset

The project aimed to engage between 50 and 75 adults with learning disabilities in Dorchester and Weymouth, to help address low physical activity levels. It allowed them to take part in a range of taster sports activities, chosen by the participants. Working with local leisure centres and sports venues, a range of sports were identified by members that they wanted to try, including bowls, kick-boxing, cricket, volleyball, tennis and circuits.

Take a look at our members enjoying the activities we've run so far!
