Belonging Project

Hi readers, it’s Kerry and Emily here this week, and this week I, Kerry want to share with you my early, but worthwhile start to last week.
My week began with a 7:07am train last Monday to London. I was heading off to meet with the University team involved in the Belonging project. It’s a research project I’ve been employed to take part in over the last year, representing PFD members, about what belonging and difference for people with a learning disability. If you’d like to know more, use this link, or look it up on the NIHR School for Public Health Research.
Despite the early start, the day was really positive, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the moment we arrived.
The room was filled with artwork. We spent time walking around, spotting differences in the pieces and chatting about the data we’ve collected. There’s something special about meeting up in person, as we’ve formed such a great connection as a group, that the day was full of easy conversation and even friendly football banter. To top it off, the conference food was a real treat!
On the train, I got talking to a fellow wheelchair user who works in Southampton. He shared some fascinating insights into the accessibility work he’s been doing, making the journey fly by.
It was a productive day, and a great reminder of how important these connections are - whether we’re discussing research projects or sharing unexpected stories on a train. I think these shared moments all help build understanding and stronger communities.
