Busy week, mixed feelings

Hi readers, it’s Emily and Kerry here, and still lots going on. In fact, it feels like most weeks are like that nowadays.
This week I, Kerry, have just been to the inclusive Easter service at Dorchester Baptist Church, always a positive atmosphere.  The service was fun, interesting, and was good to see many lovely friends there. We all enjoyed their delicious tea afterwards. Thank you to everyone who helps organise it, you’re all fab!
Alongside meaningful community moments like that, my week was full of meetings and some worries.
I’ve noticed recently that more people, including friends with a learning disability, are struggling with their support. For some people, it’s problems with benefits; for others, support isn’t working as it should. I’ve experienced it too this week, as has someone who supports me, but that’s not for today.
It feels like it’s getting harder – not easier- for people who genuinely need support. That systems meant to help us are getting worse at understanding our needs, so decisions can feel unfair or misguided.  People say there’s no money, but then we read about millions going into some new government initiative (sometimes questionable) and huge profits in the care industry.
It just feels frustrating when people who truly need support must fight for it and are least able to do that. I can’t help thinking if some services care more about money than people, which is worrying.
With that swirling around in my head, I’m doing my best to stay positive. For me, being outside in the suns can make a day brighter, or a productive meeting. Even today, it’s raining and no bad thing – it’s a chance to stay home and dry; slow down; take a breath; absorb my thoughts- before I get back on it!
