At People First Dorset, we’re proud to be part of a groundbreaking national report that highlights the power and value of independent advocacy for people with learning disabilities and autism.
The report, Independent Advocacy for Independent Lives, commissioned by the Henry Smith Charity and carried out by Social Finance in partnership with SpeakUp, shows something we’ve always known: advocacy changes lives. It also proves that for every £1 spent on independent advocacy, £12 is saved in health and social care costs – a powerful reminder that supporting people properly isn’t just right, it’s smart.
We were one of 14 organisations across the UK involved in the research. Our role was to show how advocacy can prevent issues from escalating, empower people to understand their rights, and lead to better, more independent lives. From our Speaking Up groups to our one-to-one support, we help people take control, speak out, and feel confident in making choices.
Two of our brilliant members, Emily and Kerry, are helping take this work even further. They’re involved in sharing the report’s key messages with decision-makers and have already given evidence to Parliament and contributed to national discussions. Kerry, a former co-chair of the National Forum for people with learning disabilities, brings years of experience and insight to this vital work.
We’re excited that our members’ voices are being heard nationally, and we’ll keep working to make sure that people with learning disabilities are supported to live the lives they choose.
