Social connections in Dorset

Hi readers, it’s Emily and Kerry here, talking about the Dorset Council Consultation Event we went to this week, all about social connection. It was a really interesting day, and we enjoyed being part of it.

Lots of people came - community groups, providers, social prescribers, the council – all sharing what’s going on across Dorset in supporting people to be more connected. It was good to have everyone in the same room, learning from each other, and understanding why social connections are so important.

Some fabulous projects talked about what their work and it’s good to see how many great things are already happening. We especially liked learning about the Waffle Company in Lyme Regis. They run a café where people can come together, eat homemade waffles, and enjoy being part of a community. So, lots of groups meet there regularly and it’s a safe, welcoming space. Brilliant! We both agree that Dorchester doesn’t need another coffee shop, but what about a Waffle Café? Yes please. That said, with lots of us managing our weight, maybe some ‘healthy’ waffles too!?

We gave a short talk about how we do social connection at PFD and why it’s so important for people. We got to present in a way that works for us too, making everyone smile at each other to connect. It felt good to have our voices include, and sorry to Sam for getting him on stage, if he’s reading this!

The day gave us plenty to think about, and we both came away feeling quite inspired. The event showed the value of bringing people together, and we’d love to come to the next one as it’s great to have people with lived experience at these too! Have a great week everyone.
